The To&Through Project Team: UEI Ashley Szofer
Associate Director of Communication Strategy
The University of Chicago Urban Education Institute

Ashley Szofer is the Associate Director of Communication Strategy at the Urban Education Institute. Szofer supports the work of UEI’s core communications and policy outreach strategies by managing the planning, execution, and analysis of various projects, as well as developing and executing outreach and impact strategies for the four primary units of UEI and the organization as a whole.

Prior to working at UEI, Szofer served as an English teacher at Perspectives Charter Schools and Carl Sandburg High School. She has conducted research on teacher satisfaction levels between urban and suburban schools, seeking ways to reduce teacher attrition.  While earning her MEd at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, she also worked as an event organizer and curator for TEDxHGSE, bringing together speakers and performers for a licensed TED event to celebrate innovation in education, technology, and the arts. Szofer is currently a founding board member and communications committee member of GROWCommunity, a nonprofit dedicated to building a seamless neighborhood K-12 system on Chicago's north side through a partnership with UChicago Impact, as well as through community engagement and outreach. She is also on the Emerging Leaders Board for SOS Children's Villages Illinois, an organization that works to keep foster siblings together, and create supportive communities for them to grow.

Szofer holds a BS in adolescent language arts education from Miami University of Ohio and an MEd in education policy and management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
